When the victim signaled Robert Sammaritano, 58, of Gilbertsville, to pull over on Route 100 south near Temple Road, Sammaritano whipped out a baton, and struck the driver on March 23, North Coventry police said.

The man was able to disarm Sammaritano before an off-duty fireman stopped to control the situation, police said.

This was when Sammaritano then got back into his white BMW and fled the scene, police said.

The relationship between the two men was not immediately known.

Sammaritano was later arraigned on felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing instruments of crime, harassment, public drunkness, accidents involving attended property, and other traffic-related charges, at District Court 15-3-01.

Sammaritano was released on bail and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled.
